Hummy
24 April 2005

In a move that surely places us in the category of ‘old and boring,’ Katie and I bought a hummingbird feeder. The rationale behind this came as we were working in the kitchen one evening and a Hummingbird (which Katie has bestowed upon the name “Hummy”) paid us a visit by hovering in the balcony doorway for a few minutes. Since he was obviously wanting to partake in our dinner, we picked up a feeder and, for the past two weeks, have been watching him quickly suck it dry. Today, we added some Fuchsia, to the mix, since they are supposed to be good in shade as well as being good window-box plants, and have the added bonus of ‘attracting hummingbirds,’ or so the tag says. As we were finishing the planting this afternoon, Hummy and a friend got curious and started buzzing us. I took up a spot on the balcony with the zoom lens, and snapped a few pictures of the two…

Like I said… we’re old and boring – but the birds are quite interesting.

  1. Well… I think it’s interesting… so I must be as boring as you are.

That plant (Fuschia) is pretty. Do they die in the winter? If not… I think I’d like a few.

  2. The collective mind that is Google tells me that Fuschia is NOT winter-hardy, especially when potted. It must be kept above 5deg C, or about 40deg F, if potted. The root-system is supposedly hardy, so if it is well established in good soil it can handle getting a bit colder than that, but in general, don’t let it freeze. That said, there may be some hybrid Texas-style Fuschia that can handle the temperature swing of the Lone Star State.
