Comcast Cable Good, Verizon DSL Bad
22 April 2004

We just got our new Comcast cable internet installed, and I’ll say that it is more than fast, especially compared to our usually crappy Verizon DSL. First tests showed that we had about 2.9-3.1 Megabits (375 kBytes) downstream and a solid 240 kbits (30 kBytes) upstream. Comprably, within 5 minutes I ran the same test on the same server with our Verizon DSL, and the results were about what I expected. For the DSL, we have about 1250 kbits (156 kBytes) downstream and a meager 130 kbits (16kBytes) upstream. So, the cable is roughly twice as fast as the DSL. Latency you ask? For the DSL, pinging google 100 times yields an average of about 56 ms with a deviation of about plus or minus 4. For the cable, the same test results in an average ping of 46 ms with a deviation of about 6. Not too shabby, but we’ll have to see how it all reacts to both peak usage hours and bittorrent’s uncanny ability to completely trash latency.
