Stuck where its too hot
9 August 2003

As of noon Saturday, I haven’t quite made it to Alaska yet. We got bumped yesterday at DFW by one seat, and the flight we made it on got to Salt Lake 24 minutes after our flight to Anchorage left. So we spent the night in a hotel here in Salt lake, and tried for the 11:00 flight this morning. Unfortunately, the standby list was 48 long, and I was #46. Renier, as an employee, was #23. They got 37 of them on the plane. We decided that it was better for Reinier to go ahead, so that he didn’t take up a seat on the next flight, which right now only has 15 seats open with about 10 on the standby list. Hopefully I’ll be on that one. If not, its another night in SLC and try again tomorrow.

So we’ve lost a day at higher latitudes, but I might try and stay an extra day or so if I can. I’ve dropped too much cash thus far to only be there for a couple of days. So for now, I’m going to get listed on the 7:00pm flight, and head into SLC for a look at downtown for a few hours.

To add to the madness, they made me check my bag at DFW (which was smaller than Reinier’s that he carried on), and we really don’t know where that is. They said it was on the plane last night to ANC, then they tried to pull it, and it hasn’t been scanned since. Apparently ANC is really bad about scanning, so they think its most likely there. Reinier is going to know in a few hours, he should be landing about 5:30 CST.

The only other kink is that the rental car company closes at 7:00p, and I should make it to ANC by about 9:30p. If they won’t let Reinier pick up the car (and because he doesnt have full coverage, they probably won’t), then we may be stuck in ANC until tomorrow morning. Worst case that I don’t make it on this flight, we may be stuck there longer.

If I don’t post again, then I probably made it up there. If I get stuck here again (with only the clothes on my back, mind you) then I’ll let you all know.
