Here are a couple of interesting ones that I shot a few nights ago. Our Fuschia is finally blooming, so hopefully I can catch the birds with more than just the ugly feeder in the shot.
While I agree that the feeder isn’t, in itself, attractive… these are spectacular shots. Very well done. And, despite the “ugliness” of the feeder, it is well placed and doesn’t distract from what we really want to see.

It has been interesting trying to photograph these. Its been my first real attempt at any type of animal photography. The fact that the hummingbirds aren’t shy doesn’t hurt, but it has been incredibly hard to catch them in flight. The male is scared by the sound of the shutter, so I can get him to fly easily, but after a few shots he seems to get annoyed and leave.
One interesting thing: I’ve read that hummingbirds aren’t terribly smart and thus, use visual indicators to find their food. Thus the obvious attraction to bright colored (and even oderless) flowers. The intersting thing comes in that because of their attraction to visual cues, when we stand on the balcony, whether it be watering the flowers or messing with the feeders, it seems to attract them. If I sit perfectly still on the balcony in my favorite photo spot, they will come up a few times and then leave for awhile. I think that the visual cue of me sitting there must get old to them, and they know that it doesn’t mean that there is any new food there. I may be quite wrong about this, but it is neat to see their patterns nonetheless.
