When the bed's a shakin...

It depends on where you live, it might just be an earthquake. We were awakened this morning by a 5.6 magnitude quake (recent quakes, data) about 20 miles south of Palm Springs. This was Katie’s first earthquake to feel here, and my second. There was probably very minor damage near the epicenter, but all we felt here was about 10 seconds of light shaking and rattling.

  1. I miss earthquakes. They are a lot of fun.

The biggest one I ever felt lasted about… 30-45 seconds (a guess). I’ve been in quite a few though. Maybe… 15 or 20 if you count the small ones too.

  2. I think that the neatest thing is the real-time feedback of the quake that the USGS internet site provides. Within 30 minutes of the quake, over 20,000 people had issued reports of the quake intensity and damage assesment. When there is a big one however, I have a feeling that while the report numbers will still be high, there will be a large void of data near the epicenter—most probably very few in the worst hit areas would still have power AND internet.
