Ice and Snow
21 December 2004

Well, if you’re anywhere near the DFW area I shouldn’t have to tell you to dress warmly. If you don’t know that at this point, then the high for the day was reached way before you got up. They’re saying that it will be 27 by 5pm with light snow through at least noon. The bigger issue is that it will be below freezing through Christmas Day, with lows in the mid teens. Brrrr.

In other news, my sister did have a car accident this morning. She hit a slick patch of what was probably ice from a culvert running under the road and she rolled her trailblazer on its side. Grace was in her carseat in the back and stayed there through it all. Mother and baby are shaken, but physically they were both checked out by paramedics at the scene and are both fine.

Be careful if you have to get out. With temps below freezing for 3 days, black ice will be prevalent, even if the roads seem fine. Remember that if you start to spin, turn into the spin and don’t slam on the brakes. Don’t make sudden corrections, just try to ride it out. You would rather be in the ditch but on four wheels than flipped over. Why am I acting like a driving teacher? Because lets face it, people in Texas don’t have a clue how to drive in this crap. You may, but we can all use a reminder now and then.

Also, if they aren’t there right now, put a couple of blankets, a flashlight, and maybe some snacks in your car if you must go out. You may not need them, but that guy that just lost it into the ditch and is flagging you down might. Also make sure there is anti-freeze in the coolant in your car, and that there is some kind of freeze-resistant liquid in your windshield wiper mister. If there’s not, you’ll freeze over your windshield the first time water gets sprayed up on it. I’ve done it, driving down the road at 60mph in Colorado, and its not fun. Fortunately there were two people in the car, he drove from the passenger seat while I got the window down and then drove to the next exit with my head sticking out in the 20-degree weather. It wasn’t even my car. NOT FUN.
