Work is great.
18 January 2005

Since its the first question that people ask me on the phone these days, apart from “how is the married life?”, I thought I would explain a bit about how my new job is going and such. I really like the company and the people. I am choosing for now to keep the company name as far away from this site as possible, since my page rank on Google is pinned at number one for a search on my name and I would hate it if Google made any associations with the name of the company. It would be pretty easy for someone from the company to get all bent out of shape that I even relate myself with the company on the great and growing Blogosphere. So, on to the question.

Work is really fun, interesting, and right up my alley. I am doing some antenna design and evaluation for a project, and have become somewhat of the “token RF guy” for this facility. Of course, there are people that are much more knowledgeable and experienced in the company, but for the facility I am in, I’m pretty much it. So, that is interesting, and it is fun to finally be considered knowledgeable in the facet of engineering that interests me the most. But, that having been said, I like a lot of the other aspects of what we do too. I’m not going to go into them here, but I’ll just say that the opportunity to ‘take off’ comes frequently. The enviroment is very ‘garage-shopish’, and most of the people that work here seem to really enjoy what they do, so far myself included. The 40-min drive each day isn’t bad, with only one congested traffic spot each way.

So, that’s about it. I’m guessing you were looking for more, and, if that is the case, give me a call or shoot me an email and I’ll be happy to fill in some of the blanks. Now back to the fun world of Maxwell.

  1. Yeah, yeah… Work, great, glad you enjoy it.

Everybody wants dirty stories about you and your wife, not your job.

  2. The dirtiest story I can come up with is the fact that my first day at work they gave me a Mac G4 Powerbook. Damn BSD box doesn’t have apt-get, so I don’t know what the heck to do with it. If its out there and was written for the mac, it was made for 3rd graders, so it doesn’t work worth anything. If it was made for BSD and X11, I have to run a separate X11 session to get it to work and even then I don’t have luck all the time. It’s just a pain if you ask me. And what’s this with the bar at the top? I keep closing windows and then I apple-tab to switch apps only to find out that I’ve got 13 things open because I just hit the ‘X’ on the window and didn’t go to app->close. Pain in the ass.

My wife is a wonderful lady. There will be no dirty-story telling in this medium.

  3. 1) Someone told me once that you actually can install dpkg/apt on OSX. I wasn’t very interested, since I don’t have/want a mac. But find it, it’s out there.

    2) Just format the damn thing and put debian-ppc on it!
